Character Name: Baymax
Series: Big Hero 6
Timeline: Just prior to the creation of the Big Hero 6 team
Canon Resource Link: I am satisfied with my care.
Character History: Baymax is a large, inflatable, state-of-the-art nursebot designed to scan and assess a human being's medical needs. He is the invention of Tadashi Hamada, who created Baymax to aid millions worldwide. Tadashi, during his time at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, tried and tested Baymax endlessly, each time ending with a major failure. Despite his many setbacks, Tadashi refused to give in, and his perseverance paid off when, during his eighty-fourth test, Baymax activated as a fully functional healthcare companion.

Flash forward to where our story truly begins. Hiro Hamada, the younger genius brother of Tadashi, has initiated an illegal bot fight against Mr. Yama, an undisputed bot-fighter champion in San Fransokyo's underground. After a convincing round of defeat (feigned in order to up Yama's bet), Hiro goes on to destroy Yama's bot in a humiliating defeat. Yama, furious, orders his group of thugs to attack Hiro. Just as it looks like Hiro is about to get pummelled, however, Tadashi skids up on his moped and speeds his brother away to safety.

...Or he would have if the San Fransokyo police didn't catch the pair, along with Yama and his band of thugs, before they could escape.

Fortunately, Tadashi and Hiro's aunt Cass bails the pair out, and Hiro is able to bypass any real punishment. Tadashi scolds Hiro for his bot-fighting obsession and expresses frustration at Hiro's refusal to use his intelligence for good. Despite Tadashi's admonishments, however, Hiro plans to attend another bot fight on the other side of town. Tadashi, seemingly defeated, offers to take Hiro, claiming that if he can't stop him from fighting, he might as well make sure he gets there safely. Hiro eagerly accepts, unaware that Tadashi's offer is in fact a ruse, and the pair end up at San Fransokyo Tech, Tadashi's school. Inside, Hiro meets Tadashi's closest friends: Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred. Although initially shy and slightly dubious, Hiro gradually becomes more and more enamored with the institute and its groundbreaking technology.

After meeting the team, Tadashi takes Hiro to his lab, where he introduces him to Baymax. Tadashi explains to Hiro that he created Baymax to help people around the world, and that he is programmed with a special healthcare chip that gives him access to over ten thousand medical procedures. Tadashi then activates Baymax by ripping a piece of duct tape from Hiro's arm, causing Hiro to cry out in pain. Once activated, Baymax makes his way over to Hiro and states that Hiro's cry alerted him to the need for medical attention. He then scans Hiro, diagnoses him with a light laceration, tends to his wound, and offers him a lollipop for being a good boy. After Hiro's treatment is complete, Baymax tell Hiro that he can deactivate when he tells Baymax that he is satisfied with his care, to which Hiro obliges.

After their trip to Tadashi's lab, Tadashi and Hiro run into Professor Callaghan, a word-renowned robotics expert, Tadashi's mentor, and Hiro's personal idol. With the help of Tadashi, Callaghan cunning convinces Hiro to enrol in the institute, claiming that the school is a place where the boundaries of robotics are pushed and geniuses can put their brains to the test in order to shape the future. Callaghan's words instantly inspire Hiro, and after departing the institute, he confesses a sudden desire to attend.

Tadashi informs Hiro that the institute holds a convention for up-and-coming geniuses to showcase their creations every year, and that those who impress Callaghan receive an invitation to join the institute. Tadashi advises Hiro to do just that, and although Hiro eagerly agrees, he instantly hits a road block of thought and cannot think of anything to invent. Just as Hiro is about to give up all together, Tadashi restores his faith by telling him to look at things from a new angle. This advise eventually leads Hiro to a breakthrough and, after a long period of trial and error (and with the help of Tadashi, Gogo, Wasabi, Honey, and Fred), Hiro creates his Microbots--miniature, electromagnetic robots capable of forming anything through the use of a headband neurotransmitter.

Hiro takes his Microbots to San Fransokyo Tech and shows them at the annual convention. Although nervous at first, Hiro presents a fantastic showcase that impresses both Callaghan and pioneer entrepreneur Alistair Krei. Although Krei offers Hiro a vast amount of money in exchange for his Microbots, Callaghan accuses Krei of using technology for his own selfish reasons and convinces Hiro to deny the offer. A frustrated Krei leaves the scene, and Callaghan congratulates Hiro on his success and grants him admission to the institute.

To celebrate, Cass offers to take Hiro, Tadashi, and their friends back to the café for a free dinner. Tadashi and Hiro, however, separate from the group for a moment of bonding. Once they're alone, Tadashi congratulates Hiro on his success, proud that he is finally using his genius for greater things. Unfortunately, before the brothers can bond for too long, the institute's fire alarm sounds. Tadashi and Hiro run to the showcase hall, which is engulfed in flames. A fleeing civilian informs the brothers that Callaghan is still inside the burning building. Unwilling to let Callaghan die, Tadashi ignores Hiro's protests and runs inside to save his mentor. Hiro, torn, eventually tries to follow Tadashi inside, but before he can reach the door, the building violently explodes, rendering him unconscious and killing both Tadashi and Callaghan.

After Tadashi's funeral, Hiro falls into a deep depression. Cass, Gogo, Wasabi, Honey, and Fred all attempt to comfort the mourning Hiro, but to no avail. Hiro ignores Cass and the gang's attempt to get him to register for classes at San Fransokyo Tech, and instead holes himself up in his room.

Then, one day, Hiro, still in mourning, accidentally stubs his toe, letting out a pained cry and activating a dormant Baymax in Tadashi's room. Baymax greets Hiro and attempts to tend to his wounds. Hiro denies the offer and tries to deactivate the nursebot, only to accidentally stumble upon one of his Microbots, which is still trying to reunite with its other bots. Hiro, believing the fire to have destroyed the rest of his Microbots, ignores the lone Microbot's strange behavior and assumes it is malfunctioning. Baymax, however, takes notice and tells Hiro that his tiny robot is trying to go somewhere. Hiro, unmoved, sarcastically orders Baymax to find out where it is trying to go, which Baymax takes literally. Hiro, alerted to Baymax's absence after he hears the front door close, throws himself out of his room and chases a wandering Baymax through the city, eventually ending up at an abandoned warehouse. Frustrated, Hiro attempts to drag Baymax away, but quickly notices that the Microbot in Baymax's hands is actively attempting to go in the direction of the warehouse. Still believing the fire to have destroyed his Microbots, Hiro is confused and breaks into the warehouse to investigate. Once inside, he stumbles across a machine creating thousands upon thousands of new Microbots. Before Hiro can put the pieces of this mystery together, however, the Microbots begin to rise up out of their containers and attack. Hiro and Baymax evade them, just barely, and eventually encounter a dark figure in a kabuki mask--Yokai, the man responsible for the theft of Hiro's Microbots. The man pursues the pair, but is unable to catch them.

Hiro and Baymax immediately make their way to the police station to report Yokai. Hiro desperately explains the story, but the officer on call, Officer Gerson, dismisses it as pure fantasy. Hiro asks Baymax to backup his claims, but before Baymax can respond, he quickly begins to lose power, rendering him nonfunctional and forcing Hiro to admit defeat and take him home to recharge. Sneaking past an oblivious Cass, Hiro puts Baymax in to charge. As Baymax slowly regains power, he acknowledges Tadashi's absence and questions his whereabouts. Hiro reveals Tadashi's death, and, acknowledging Hiro's distress, Baymax downloads a database on human emotion and personal loss in order to properly treat Hiro's grief. In accordance with the database, Baymax contacts Hiro's friends (believing that their presence will help subdue Hiro's depression) and physically reassures Hiro with a hug.

While comforting Hiro, Baymax expresses sympathy over the fire, causing Hiro to reflect on the nature of Tadashi's death. It is at this moment he realizes that the fire was not in fact an accident, but a way for Yokai to cover his theft. Filled with sudden rage, Hiro swears to avenge his brother and recruits Baymax to take Yokai down. Recognizing that Baymax's body makes him particularly vulnerable, however, Hiro fashions a suit of armor to protect Baymax's balloon-like exterior and programs a karate memory chip, giving him the ability to battle. Although Baymax is uncomfortable with his new upgrades, feeling that the modifications may undermine his healthcare purposes, Hiro assures Baymax that they will make him a better healthcare companion. Swayed, Baymax allows Hiro to train him in the art of karate and fistbumping (which Baymax swiftly adds to his care giving matrix).

After Baymax's training, the pair sneak out into the night to track down Yokai. Upon arrival at the warehouse, however, he is nowhere to be seen. Hiro seeks guidance from the lone Microbot still in his possession, and follows it to a nearby dock, where Yokai soon appears bearing a large, seemingly broken piece of technology. Hiro and Baymax go into silent hiding until Honey, Go Go, Wasabi and Fred arrive, Baymax having contacted them earlier. The noise of their arrival instantly attracts Yokai's attention, who, in true villain fashion, throws a load of cargo at the gang in the hopes of crushing them. Baymax quickly foils his attempt, catching the cargo and allowing the gang to hastily retreat in Wasabi's van. Baymax stays behind to fight, but meets a quick defeat when Yokai throws him on the top of Wasabi's van. The gang amp up their terrified retreat, Yokai in tow, and soon find themselves in a life or death chase throughout the city. During the chase, Yokai almost knocks Hiro out of the van, but Baymax swiftly catches him. So that Hiro won't fall out again, Baymax fastens the boy's seat belt and reminds him of its importance. Luckily, and despite Yokai's several attempts on their life, the gang manage to escape by driving off a ledge and into the bay. Once Yokai retreats, believing the gang to be dead, Baymax sheds his armor and floats everyone back to shore. Now wet and bedraggled, everyone squelches their way back into the city and to Fred's mansion home. Once inside, Baymax activates his built-in body heater to warm up everyone's bodies. As Hiro ponders Yokai's true identity, Baymax reveals that he scanned Yokai's health (as he is meant to care for everyone), allowing Hiro to use the information to track the villain down. However, before he can do this, he, Baymax, and the rest of the gang must undergo modifications to become a powerful group of superheroes.

After several scientific modifications and upgrades, and some heavy duty training, the group of friends become "Big Hero 6," a superhero team bent on taking down Yokai. Baymax is the last to receive an upgrade, which comes in the form of a new, red supersuit, wings, rocket fists, an upgraded fighting chip, and a superior scanning system. After Hiro reveals him to the gang, he takes Baymax for a test flight throughout the city, whizzing over traffic and skyscrapers, and eventually into the clouds, landing on an air balloon towering over the city. Here, Hiro and Baymax bond, enhancing Hiro's happiness much to the delight of Baymax. Baymax asks Hiro if he's satisfied with his care, believing his job to be complete (as his true objective throughout their adventure is not to avenge Tadashi, but to ensure Hiro's health and happiness). Hiro denies Baymax's suggestion, claiming that they have a job to finish, and orders Baymax to scan the city. Baymax does so, and discovers a match to Yokai's health information on an island not far from the mainland.

The gang set off to the island on Baymax, and when they arrive, discover an abandoned facility. Inside, they find a machine in the process of restoration, but are unable to decipher what its function is. They continue to investigate, and their snooping eventually leads them to a room of recordings from the facility. After watching the recordings, the gang learns that the facility originally belonged to Alistair Krei, and that the machine was a portal meant to enhance transportation. Although one of the technicians expresses concern that there is an irregularity with the portal's magnetic containment field, Krei insists that it won't be a problem, and that they move forward with the test. The test subject, a woman named Abigail, straps herself into a capsule and enters the portal, but as she enters the first half, the machine malfunctions and destructs, trapping her inside. When the recording finishes, the gang come to the conclusion that Krei is responsible for stealing the Microbots in the hopes of rebuilding his portals.

Just then, Yokai appears and begins to attack them once again. A battle ensues, and in the process, Hiro accidentally dismantles Yokai's kabuki mask--but, rather than Krei behind the mask, it is Callaghan, much to Hiro's surprise and betrayal. Callaghan confesses to stealing the Microbots, and reveals that he used them to escape the fire alive and unharmed. A heartbroken Hiro explains to Callaghan that Tadashi died trying to save his mentor, a fact to which Callaghan expresses no sympathy or regret, claiming that it was Tadashi's choice to follow him inside. Enraged, Hiro orders Baymax to kill Callaghan. Baymax refuses to commit the act, explaining that he is programmed not to bring harm upon a human being. Hiro, blinded by hatred and grief, removes Baymax's healthcare chip, leaving only his fighting chip and sending him into a violent rampage. Seeing this, Go Go, Wasabi, and Fred try to fend off Baymax, and, in the chaos, Callaghan manages to retrieve his mask and retreat.

Honey recovers Baymax's healthcare chip and restores him to his original settings. Realizing what he has done, Baymax apologizes for causing the gang harm. Hiro, however, angrily criticizes the gang, blaming them for Callaghan's escape. The gang tries to defend themselves, stating that the plan was never to kill Callaghan, only to apprehend him. Hiro ignores their arguments and leaves them alone on the island, returning home to repair Baymax's suit. There, Hiro attempts to remove Baymax's healthcare chip once again, but finds that he is unable to open the drive. Remembering what happened the last time Hiro removed his healthcare chip, Baymax refuses to let Hiro open his access port, and asks Hiro if terminating Callaghan will make him happy. Overwhelmed with anger and grief, Hiro breaks down into tears and openly voices his despair over Tadashi's death. Baymax comforts Hiro, telling him that "Tadashi is here," and presents a series of recorded footage of Tadashi on his video monitor. Tadashi's presence brings comforts Hiro, and he thanks Baymax for his comfort and bringing him to his senses.

The gang soon arrive, bearing new evidence in the form of new video footage uncovered at the facility. Instead of reprimanding Hiro for leaving them on the island, everyone expresses understanding that his actions were out of grief and not spite, and vow to bring Callaghan to justice. After a brief bonding moment, the gang show Hiro the new footage they uncovered. The new footage reveals that Abigail, Krei's initial test subject, was in fact Callaghan's daughter, and that the accident caused Callaghan to seek revenge on Krei.

With this new information, the gang hustle to Krei Tech, where Krei is in the middle of an important showcase. Just as they arrive, Callaghan arrives (hidden behind his kabuki mask) and captures Krei. Callaghan reveals himself and his plot to use the newly recreated portal and its faulty magnetic containment field to destroy Krei's new building and, ultimately, Krei himself. Krei attempts to talk sense in Callaghan, but Callaghan ignores his pleas. Hiro approaches Callaghan and tries to reason with him, explaining that revenge won't bring Abigail back, but Callaghan's blind fury overcomes him, and he activates the portal. Hiro and the gang, left with no other choice, battle Callaghan, aiming for his mask (which allows him to control the Microbots), but Callaghan soon gets the upper hand, knocking Hiro toward the portal and leaving the gang to die at the hands of his Microbots. As Hiro is pulled toward the portal, he notices that the Microbots are also hurtling toward it.

As Hiro plots a new plan of attack, Baymax rescues him from getting pulled into the portal and brings him to the rest of the gang. Hiro explains that instead of aiming their attacks at Callaghan, they must aim them at the Microbots, for once the Microbots are not connected to one other, they will no longer have an electromagnetic pull, and the portal will suck them up into it. Once the Microbots are gone, Callaghan will no longer have a source of power. With the new plan in action, the gang start breaking apart the Microbots while Hiro and Baymax attract Callaghan's attention, causing him to fire towers of Microbots in their direction. Dodging the Microbots, the pair fly to the point where they are almost sucked into the portal, from where Hiro orders Baymax to dive and break apart the Microbot formation, sending them into the portal. Eventually, Callaghan captures the pair and prepares to kill them once and for all, only to find that he has run out of Microbots, thus rendering him powerless and vulnerable. With this revelation, Hiro and Baymax break free of their confinement and launch toward the villain. Fearfully, Callaghan prepares for his demise, but Hiro, wanting to follow the moral code that Baymax set, spares his life, ridding Callaghan only of his mask and severing his control over the Microbots.

While the gang apprehend Callaghan, Baymax senses that there is life within the still active portal. Hiro realizes that the life must be Abigail, and knows that he and Baymax must journey inside the portal to save her. Krei attempts to stop the pair, stating that the portal will rip itself apart while they are inside, but Hiro ignores his warning. Inside the portal, Hiro and Baymax quickly locate Abigail, who is in hyper-sleep. The pair fly to her capsule, but as they make their way back to the portal's entrance, a piece of debris from Krei's demolished building strikes them, causing Baymax to lose most of his armor. Hiro reaches out for Baymax, who manages to grab a hold of his hand, but with his suit out of commission, Baymax can no longer fly them out of the self-destructing portal. Baymax tells Hiro that he must use his one remaining rocket-fist to send both Hiro and Abigail to safety, knowing that his sacrifice is the only way to save Hiro, and requests that Hiro deactivate him. Hiro refuses, knowing that this will result in Baymax's permanent imprisonment within the portal. Baymax disregards his own safety, and he reassures Hiro that he'll always be with him. Left without a choice, Hiro tearfully hugs Baymax, bids him farewell, and informs him that he is satisfied with his care. At Hiro's words, Baymax activates his rocket fist and hurtles Hiro and Abigail out of the portal seconds before the portal self-destructs. Now safe, Hiro reunites with the others and reveals Baymax's fate. The gang comfort each other as the police and paramedics arrive to arrest Callaghan and tend to Abigail respectively.

Following the battle with Callaghan, Hiro makes a tremendous recovery from his depression and spends his days hanging out with Go Go, Wasabi, Honey, and Fred. Finally joining San Fransokyo Tech as an official student, he settles into Tadashi's old lab, where he displays Tadashi's hat and Baymax's last piece of armor: his rocket fist. Reminiscing fondly, Hiro fistbumps the armor, dislodging Baymax's original programming chip (containing both his personality and his memories), which Baymax hid inside the fist before sending Hiro and Abigail to safety. Hiro, with some work, is eventually able to recreate Baymax and revive him entirely with his healthcare chip. The moment Baymax is activated, he instantly recognizes Hiro, and the pair reunite in a happy embrace. Following this reunion, Hiro reassembles the Big Hero 6 gang, thus finally putting his incredible potential to great use as Tadashi had always wanted.

Abilities/Special Powers: Baymax is programmed with over ten thousand medical procedures, and his artificial intelligence system is memory chip based. He is capable of updating and upgrading his intelligence at any time via the transfer of data from a computer system. While Baymax does not need a chip to function, each chip serves as a kind of memory backup--that is, he will forget anything that is not a part of his core data upon their removal. He is currently equipped with Tadashi's healthcare chip and Hiro's karate chip.

Baymax is also equipped with defibrillators in his hands, antibacterial spray in his fingers, a heating system, and internal scanners and sensors. He's just a big ol' walking, talking, marshmallow nurse.

He also knows karate, but his nonthreatening, vinyl, puffball body kind of gets in the way of any real damage.

Third-Person Sample:

Most days, Hiro is happy. He spends time with his friends and goes to all of his classes and helps his aunt Cass out in the store. He makes groundbreaking discoveries and impresses his peers and performs acts of heroism around the city with his ragtag team of superheros.

But some days... Some days, Hiro is not happy.

Today is one of those days.

Baymax watches as Hiro cries in earnest, hidden behind his pillow. His shoulders lift in bursts ($muscle_spasms), and his breath catches wetly ($decreased_oxflow), and every so often he makes a pained cry ($em_distress). Concerned for Hiro's health, Baymax activates his sensors and, like minutes before, and like the minutes before that, scans his patient's vitals:

func preliminary_diagnosis ($bp, $hr, $tmp, $ec, $oxflow)
{
    $res=calculate_result($bp, $hr, $tmp, $ec, $oxflow
    if ($res < 20)
        return_diagnosis "vital signs low";
    if ($res >=80 && $res <= 90)
        return_diagnosis "vital signs within normal range";
    if ($res > 150)
        return_diagnosis "vital signs elevated";
}

Increased heart rate. Decreased oxygen flow. Muscular tremors. Lacrimal gland secretion. Just as it did with each prior scan, his database returns with only one diagnosis: grief.

func fetch_definition ($input_word)
{
    $res=dictionary_lookup ($input_word);
}

Grief (n): intense sorrow, especially caused by someone's death.

Baymax moves closer to Hiro and places a hand on his shoulder. Hiro doesn't acknowledge him, which Baymax does not take offense to; he merely files the reaction away in Hiro's patient file (patient rejects physical reassurance). He keeps his hand on Hiro's shoulder, rubs it back and forth in an attempt at comfort, and removes it only when Hiro finally peeks his head out from behind his pillow.

"Your neurotransmitter levels indicate that you are experiencing feelings of hopelessness and despair," Baymax explains. "Treatments include--"

"I know what the treatments are, buddy," Hiro mumbles, wiping at his eyes. "You don't have to remind me."

"Would you like me to contact your friends?"

"No," Hiro says, looking away. "I'll... I'm gonna be fine."

A silence falls between the pair. Baymax turns his head to the empty room attached to Hiro's ($patient_tadashi).

"Do you miss Tadashi?" Baymax asks.

Hiro follows Baymax's gaze. "Yeah," he says. "Yeah."

"I too miss Tadashi."

Hiro looks back at Baymax, who turns his head back to focus his attention on Hiro. Then, slowly, he leans over and wraps his arms around the grieving boy's shoulders. Hiro sighs (slight elevation in patient's neurotransmitter levels) and presses his cheek to Baymax's body. Baymax closes his eyes.

"You will be all right," Baymax says.

"You too, buddy," Hiro replies, squeezing his arms around Baymax's body. "You too."

First-Person Sample:

[CLICK. For a moment, there is nothing but the sound of vinyl rubbing against vinyl. Then, very slowly, a large, white, marshmallow-like form moves in front of the camera.]

Hello. I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion. I am programmed to assess your healthcare needs. How may I be of assistance?

[Pause. Turns head.]

My sensor is detecting high levels of stress and anxiety.

[Shuffles off-screen in tiny, squeaky steps. Pause. Thud.]

Oh, no.

[Shuffles back on-screen.]

My non-threatening, huggable design prevents me from opening the door. I am unable to provide medical assistance in my current location. When will the door open?

[Shuffles offscreen again. Pause. Thud.]

Oh, no.
